Hull City are waiting to discover the extent of injuries to three players who departed during their victory against Manchester United on Saturday.
Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, who had both found the net before half-time to secure a comfortable 2-0 triumph at the MKM Stadium, were replaced shortly after the 60-minute mark, with Lucas Herrington and Paddy McNair entering the fray as replacements.
Skipper Lewie Coyle, who had been dealing with an ankle problem during pre-season preparations, then limped off shortly afterward due to a calf complaint. The club will assess all three individuals over the next two days, and they must be considered uncertain for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup encounter.
Mendy had reported a groin complaint during Friday’s training session but was cleared to feature in the match, and officials are optimistic he will recover without complications and could feature in the weekend fixture at Coventry City.
The primary worry centres on Ajayi, who had been commanding in his defensive duties before succumbing to what appeared to be a hamstring problem. This represents a significant worry given his injury difficulties in previous campaigns.
The club already finds itself managing numerous injuries to important squad members and cannot afford to lose any of this trio, all of whom proved instrumental in an impressive opening-day success, marking the club’s maiden top-flight victory over United.
Hull expect Hidemasa Morita to be ready for the Carabao Cup journey to Stoke City on Tuesday evening. Head coach Sergej Jakirovic had indicated the Japanese international midfielder might have been among the substitutes against United, but instead completed his recovery work at Cottingham with a view to participating in the Potteries fixture.
